Çinili Hamam, Zeyrek

Planlux participated in the development of lighting scheme for Çinili Hamam in Zeyrek, Fatih. Architectural design by KaBa Architects.

The Çinili Hamam, built by Mimar Sinan in the historic Zeyrek district, showcases his architectural brilliance. Renowned for its intricate tile work, from which it gets its name, the bathhouse features vibrant hand-painted tiles, a traditional dome, and vaulted ceilings. This design reflects Ottoman craftsmanship and sophistication. Sinan’s influence extends beyond his monumental mosques; he transformed Istanbul into a hub of architectural innovation, enriching the daily lives of its residents with functional and beautiful public spaces like the Çinili Hamam.

Given the historical significance of the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, the lighting design sought to respect its original reliance on natural light. In the time of Mimar Sinan, the hamam was illuminated solely by natural light, which entered through small skylights and windows, delicately filtering through the domes to create a soft, ambient glow within the interior.

Inside the hamam, special attention was given to emphasizing the domes, muqarnases which were a key feature in the original design. Surface-mounted lighting equipment was used here as well, strategically placed to highlight the curves and symmetry of the domes. The lighting draws attention to these magnificent architectural elements, casting a warm glow that echoes the natural light of the past, while still allowing for modern usability.

To highlight the unique character of this architectural masterpiece, key features of the hamam—such as the intricate tile work, the monumental domes and the muqarnases—were illuminated with care. The lighting design aims to bring out the depth and texture of the stone and tile without overpowering their natural beauty.

The area surrounding the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, which is used for various activities and ceremonies, was thoughtfully designed with landscape lighting to create a versatile and welcoming space. This lighting setup enhances the outdoor area, transforming it into a functional venue for events. Soft, ambient lights illuminate pathways and gathering spaces, while accent lighting highlights key features of the landscape. The result is an inviting atmosphere that complements the historical setting of the hamam and supports its use as a vibrant venue for community and cultural activities.

In keeping with this historical context, the exterior lighting was designed to be discreet, avoiding any direct installation of fixtures on the façade. Instead, spotlights were carefully positioned around the environment to softly illuminate the building, emphasizing its architectural form while preserving its historical character. This subtle approach allows the hamam to integrate naturally into its surroundings during the day, while its architectural elegance is subtly highlighted at night, maintaining its status as a cultural landmark.

To ensure safe passage and enhance the visitor experience, surface-mounted lighting fixtures were installed along the walking routes. These lights provide gentle illumination, guiding visitors without overpowering the natural ambiance of the site. The fixtures are designed to blend with the surroundings, ensuring that they do not detract from the hamam’s historical presence.

By selectively lighting these features, the design celebrates the craftsmanship of Mimar Sinan and ensures that the historical importance of the structure is conveyed to visitors in a respectful and captivating way.
