Roka Bodrum

Lighting design by Into, with Planlux as local lighting consultant.

Planlux collaborated with Into, Azumi, and Dream as the local lighting designer, supporting the project from design development and implementation through fine-tuning and handover. For Roka Bodrum, the lighting approach was shaped by the site’s natural context—an expansive terrace surrounded by trees and opening into the night—resulting in a balanced, atmospheric scheme that guides movement, reveals material textures, and preserves the character of the open-air setting.

Under the pergolas, the bar and robata surfaces were highlighted with controlled lighting, while in other areas, vertical surfaces were articulated through upward light washes from the ground. This approach also allowed the surrounding trees to become an integral part of the lighting composition.

Throughout the lighting design process, we worked closely with INTO, providing local lighting design consultancy for the project. Based on the concept developed and technical details shared by INTO, area-specific adjustments were made, and the lighting scheme was applied through international coordination, including detailed fine-tuning phases.

Parameters such as light intensity, contrast, color temperature, and distribution were carefully considered to establish a balanced transition between light and shadow. Luminaires with high color rendering values were selected to ensure that materials and textures were perceived in their natural tones. Given the technical challenges of outdoor conditions, durable, long-lasting, and energy-efficient solutions were preferred.

This approach offered not only functional lighting but also an artistic expression. Preserving darkness and directing light only toward selected surfaces and objects went beyond conventional restaurant lighting, creating a distinctive and refined atmosphere. In this way, light strengthened the identity of the space through a language that is both respectful of nature and innovative.

The lighting design for Roka Bodrum resulted in a sophisticated and tranquil atmosphere that enriches the user experience. This sensitive dialogue with the natural environment stands as an elegant response to both aesthetic and technical challenges.
