Planlux participated in the development of the architectural lighting design project of Microsoft Technology Center (MTC), interior design by Muum Architects. The project is located on the existing Istanbul office building’s basement floor without any natural light.
MTC includes areas like exploratorium, holo lens room, flexible spaces, conference, presentation, and meeting rooms. MTC is the introduction and presentation place for advanced technologies and experiences for Microsoft. So, the lighting concept was designed to fit with the flexible needs of the space. The main area such as exploratorium, ceiling form, and natural light requirement aimed at the design to have different interactions and adaptation of many scenarios when needed.
Our design strategy was based on basic human needs. Our design goal was to make people forget that they are in the basement where there is no natural light. Thanks to the height of the ceiling in the multipurpose main space, it gave us the opportunity to design different interactions in line with the ceiling structure and natural light needs with various light scenes. A skylight effect is designed with mood changing luminaires installed on a wooden ceiling structure. The structure itself creates a natural cut off like a natural window, preventing to see the luminaires in their ordinary flow of works and help people the movement when ıt changes intensity and color temperature in different sections with a planned scenario. Our goal was to design a space where new technologies and products are introduced with events. We are happy to be a part of this special project, using light to integrate the company’s corporate identity, and functionality as well as basic human needs.
